This is the second edition of Small Signal Design. It's a fascinating book if you are interested in electronic design in the audio field. Mr. Self has included very through explanations of transistor and op amp circuits related to small signal audio design. He explains how circuits work and which characteristics of circuits are important. He builds many of the circuits to prove out theory and his simulations. He then explains the use of these circuits in various pieces of electronic equipment.This latest edition has a lot more material on design of circuitry that interfaces with for example; phone cartridges. I'm not interested in designing such circuitry, but I still found those sections very interesting and worthwhile, because they added to my overall knowledge of design. This latest edition must be at least 100 pages longer than the first edition, which I also own, and the added pages are very valuable.I use the knowledge I have gained from Mr. Self's books to better understand audio equipment and to help decide which equipment is well designed. These aren't easy subjects and a couple of readings of the books are required; but, I've found that after reading this book and Mr. Self's book on power amplifiers, I can often look pictures of circuits boards from various pieces of equipment, or the circuit boards themselves, and have an excellent idea of their actual circuitry. I can reference datasheets from say op amps, and tell which ones have better specifications for a particular application. That means Mr. Self is doing a great job of educating me; with some work on my part!If you enjoy the technical part of audio, especially electronics, this a wonderful book. I also enjoy Mr. Self's humor which makes the material much more interesting.
This is one of those rare technical books which are well-written and serve as an in-depth bridge between theory and practice. It's very nice to have around if you've got an electrical engineering background and are getting back into audio circuit design. It reminds me of Walter Jung's book "Op Amp Applications Handbook," Analog Devices, 2005, although Self is a bit less gentle with the reader. I love the jabs regarding the "Audiophile" community (see also "Science and subjectivism" in chapter 1 of Self's "Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook; really nice).
This book is an incredibly interesting look at audio electronics design. The book mainly focuses on preamplifier design and it gives plenty of insight on how to optimize certain parts of the circuit to maximize performance. Everything is backed up with graphs and the author does a good job keeping you invested as the information can get quite complicated.I only have a few small complaints with the book. First, while the information isn't outdated per se, things have changed since the book was published. For example, the LM4562 is not as expensive as it used to be so it may be a better option than the NE5532 in some cases. I can't really criticize the book for not predicting the future however, so just keep in mind that prices and technology have changed even in the past few years. The only other complaint I have is that I believe there are errors in some schematics. For example, the 17v power supply schematic has the incorrect pin numbers for the linear regulators. Again, not a huge deal just keep it in mind and always check the datasheet for the components you buy.If you have a background in electronics and want to get into audio design this is a great place to start. I highly recommend this book.
The author is opinionated, but presents numerous arguments AND measurements regarding those opinions. The book focuses on AC designs with excellent performance in the human audible range, some discussion of designs which are valid down to DC is present. However, this book strongly differs from mainstream circuit design and discussion by obsessive attention to signal integrity metrics such as distortion and linearity. For a small signal power concerns can largely be ignored as they will contribute very little to the overall system (as compared to an output power amplifier) and this perspective shift is well enjoyed.
Upon a first go through, the material looks amazing and very thorough. Self details designs and explains in depth the operation and pitfalls of common electronic design methods. I will say that the intended audience is someone who has an electronics background (engineer or technician) and previous knowledge of op amps/transistor amplifier design. He does go through these designs in great detail but he doesn't always take baby steps; which I honestly prefer.However, I took a star off because there seems to be a typo on the front cover? It only says 'Small Signal' on the cover, but the spine of the book has the proper title and edition number. This honestly doesn't bother me much since the information inside is definitely from the 2nd edition, but for as much as this book costs, that seems unacceptable. This could just be an Amazon problem rather than the book itself or perhaps I just got a wrong one off. Either way I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and know other people will care more than I do. Other than the build quality seems sturdy for a paperback textbook and I look forward to reading this cover to cover.
Just didn't know what it was called... This is a comprehensive text book style explanation of everything you could ever want to know about pro audio design and build. I have already changed one build I'm in the middle of after reading the chapter on mixers. Just great information all around.
A clearly explained and illustrated text. With a couple exciting professional audio design projects in the works, I couldn't put the book down, it was so helpful. It’s earned a spot on my technical library along side other luminaries, e.g, Olson, Jung, Holman, Blauert, Toole, Rayleigh (Strutt), and 40yr of AES journals.

Self is an acknowledged master of his craft - designing high end audio. This latest addition covers everything from discrete design to selecting op-amps, from small signal microphone and MC inputs to line level.The one drawback is that many of the components used in the designs are either obsolete or very hard to get. This is not Self's fault, it is the industry moving to SMT and integrated circuits.Others criticize Self's tone in his treatment of subjectivity and the return to Vinyl but he speaks as someone who has genuine knowledge of the recording chain.

A great book (again), but sadly marred by some typos, inconsistencies and errors. Certainly lots of valuable information within, but just make sure you double check any values or schematics if you take inspiration from its pages.
